A bit further, the unmissable D day beaches (Plages du D\u00e9barquement) are important historical places you can also visit during the day. Right over there, the Caen Memoral (M\u00e9morial de Caen) is a symbol of peace, but it also pays tribute to all those soldiers defending freedom. On the other hand, Caen also holds a more ancient history with its abbeys and its gigantic thousand-year old castle located in the heart of the city, as a testimony of the glorious era of William the Conqueror leaving from the neighboring port of Dives Sur Mer to invade our cousins, the Bretons! Then come back by the road of the Nacre Coast (C\u00f4te de Nacre) and stop in Cabourg. This charming resort has stayed the same as when the first sea bathers were soaking in the water. And if you are \u201cin search of lost time\u201d (A la recherche du temps perdu”), note that some sources say it is here that Marcel Proust found the inspiration for Volume II of his oeuvre while contemplating the young bathers having a quick dip.
